Momtrepreneur Monday | Kanya Middleton | MD of Stone Culture

Name: Kanya Middleton
Children: Mother of 3
Company: Stone Culture, Talent Agency
Located: Johannesburg, South Africa

In the Beginning

After my third child was born I birthed my company Stone Culture and had no clue what it was going to do as a company and a bit fearful of the unknown. I had just been retrenched from a high paying corporate position in the Environmental field and didn’t want to go back to anything closely related to it. I had a Masters in Environmental Studies and years of experience but I had been so career absorbed, I worshiped my career, so when I fell…I fell hard. After falling I honestly wanted God to guide my next move. So I called the company Stone Culture, representing a firm foundation for whatever I did next.
I was passionate about TV, video blogging and people. So thought of the idea of owning a talent agency. But where to start? I was so encouraged by a fellow Momtrepreneur who said she would connect me if I started my own agency, and she did. So I literally opened my doors with myself being the first Registered Talent and learnt as I went along. From video blogging and sourcing clients for “My Rhythm of Life” to performing on TV commercials like Sun City, Nando’s and Thyme Bank. There is so much truth in faking it till you make it! But once I was confident with using myself as the Ginnie pig I expanded my doors to a whole portfolio of talent. Here are but a few of our fabulous talents:

What do you love about what you do?

I love changing lives for the good and seeing more in people than they see in themselves. I get so excited and energized when I get those calls from my talent when they realise that “They are MORE, than what they think they are!” and/or when they have had so much fun on set just being themselves.

What is your major struggle?

Other than delayed payments from major corporates! Eish! I love having a close relationship with my talent but often that comes with knowing what they are going through and it is hard to listen when it is bad and I can’t tangibly make a difference. Usually, in these cases I just find myself praying on the phone with them. Which funny ends up having a far greater impact than any tangible thing.
The other major challenge is having to deal with everything pretty much alone – Marketing, Admin, Finance, tech support, strategist the works. Sometimes I don’t know if I am coming or going. Often in these cases, I just have to have faith that I am focusing on what God wants me to do and at that time.

What are some of your major achievement/s:

My achievements are very relational…as you can see… I honestly love the relationship I have built with my talent and clients. It is authentic and real. My clients know I am a mother who is on a major hustle and can get things done quickly! My talent also know that I make moves quickly but I am legit and have their best interest in mind. The truth is Relationships are the key to success! Without these relationships, I wouldn’t have completed “The Professionals”, a new international TV Series coming out this early this year, where +1000 of Stone Culture Talent were on set as background artists and some featured. “The Professionals” is said to be Africa’s biggest co-production to date with stars like Brendan Fraser (The Mummy), Tom Welling (Smallville), Elena Anaya (Wonderwoman) and Said Taghmaoui (American Hustle). Here are some of our behind the scenes of our Bad Boys on set:

Encouragement to others:

From a spiritual side: Have faith in your creator! He knows you better than you know yourself. I have often fallen off the rails because I got very self-absorbed, which is easy in this industry. So be deliberate to keep God close in guiding your organisation and how you lead it.
From a busi
ness practical side: Surround yourself with people who are experts in their industries and don’t be afraid to ask for help. I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t have those people who I could call up to just ask a business question – Lawyer Friends and Finance friends are the BEST!
